Family and Birth of Khwaja Ghulam Farid (R.A)
Hazrat Khwaja Ghulam Farid (R.A) belonged to Farooqi lineage. His father migrated from Arabia to Sindh and from Sindh to Mithan Kot. His father’s name was Hazrat Khwaja Khuda Bakhsh (R.A). He was born in 1845 A.D (1261 Hijri). Real name of Khwaja Ghulam Farid (R.A) was Khurshid Alam.
Khwaja Ghulam Farid (R.A) was brought up by his elder brother Hazrat Khwaja Fakhruddin (R.A). Hazrat Khwaja Fakhruddin (R.A) was the Gaddi Nasheen of his father. He was also the spiritual master of Hazrat Khwaja Ghulam Farid (R.A). He memorized Holy Quran in his earlier age. He also learnt Arabic. Nawab Sadiq Mohammad Khan of Bahawalpur had great reverence with the family of Khwaja Ghulam Farid. He arranged for the education of Khwaja Sahib in Ahmadpur Sharkia. There Khwaja Shaib got education for 16 years. He learnt Quran, Hadees, Tafseer, Logic, Fiqh, Geography, Music, Astrology. He also learnt Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Persian and Marwari language.
Pledge at the hands of his elder brother
His elder brother Hazrat Khwaja Fakhruddin (R.A) was a great poet of Persian. Khwaja Fakhruddin (R.A) lived for 54 years and died in 1288 Hijri. Khwaja Sahib’s age was 28 years at that time. Khwaja Sahib went into spiritual discipleship of his elder brother and started spreading Islam in Mithan Kot.
In 1876 A.D Khwaja Ghulam Farid (R.A) went for Hajj. During his Hajj, he wrote Kafian (his particular form of poetry). In his kafis Makkah and Madina is also written at some places. Khwaja Sahib was fond of travelling. He visited the historical places of India. He also visited the shrines of Saints and Sufis.
Hazrat Khwaja Ghulam Farid (R.A) had a great deal of esteem for Ibn e Arabi. He was also attracted towards music. Like other saints of the Chistiya order Khwaja Sahib was fond of Qawwali. His favorite Qawwal was named Barkat. His kafian have musical touch.
Literary contributions of Khwaja Ghulam Farid
Khwaja Sahib was a very famous Sufi poet. His collection of Kafis is compiled under his Dewan. It is named as Dewan e Farid. The Saraiki version of Dewan e Farid was published in 1882 and Urdu version in 1884. Manaqabe Mehboobia and Fawaid e Faridia are his Persian prose collections. Death and Shrine
Khwaja Ghulam Farid (R.A) died on 6th Rabi ul Sani 1319 Hijri (24th July 1901 A.D). He got an age of 54 years. His died 6 years earlier than Mian Mohammad Bakhsh R.A. Khwaja Sahib is burried in Mithan Kot where a great shrine is built. Thousands of people visit his shrine and pay tribute.
